​For me personally, I don't love eating huge salads. so a few years back I started experimenting with blending all kinds of things in the Vitamix blender, which is a great blender by the way.

​I would blend greens with carrots, bell peppers, beets, celery, ginger, and pretty much every other vegetable you could imagine.

It took a little getting used to but once I found some green drinks that I liked it was pretty easy to follow through.

Soon I noticed the extra weight around my stomach began to just go away...and this is without me doing anything to my routine except adding these drinks.

  1.  3 handfuls of dark leafy greens
  2.  One green apple, cored and quartered
  3.  2 tablespoons flax seeds
  4.  One cup of water or coconut water

Throw it all in the blender and blend. That's it!

You can experiment with this recipe by adding frozen berries or a favorite juice instead of the water or the coconut water. But try to stay away from drinks with added sugar.

2. Eat More Protein

Protein's become a big buzz word lately and for good reason. Did you know that around 30% of the calories you consume from protein are used just to break down the protein that you ate?

​Protein is less likely to be converted into fat and provides the amino acids your body needs to build muscle.

The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn during the day because muscle burns calories just to maintain itself.

​Now you may be thinking that protein and protein powders are reserved for the gym rats...

​Actually even if you don't go to the gym, just eating more protein can lead to an increase of your lean muscle tissue which over time causes you to burn more and more calories even when you're sitting still.

​Another benefit of protein is that it helps you feel full longer.

To put it into layman's terms, when you eat protein it sends a signal to your brain that tells your brain you’re full.

This full feeling, which is also a satisfied feeling, hangs around for much longer than the feeling you get from fat and carbohydrates.

​By eating about 4 to 6 ounces of lean protein with each one of your meals you'll be providing your body the protein it needs to build muscle and burn fat...

​Now I could split carbs and sugar into two totally separate categories but I don't want to do that, and here's why: Carbohydrates are sugars.

​If this is shocking news to you, let me explain what I mean.

When you eat carbs such as bread, pasta, birthday cake, or even sweet potatoes your body converts them to sugar.

So what's the difference between eating bread and eating sweet potatoes if they all get converted to sugar anyway?

For starters: bread, pasta, and birthday cake are not going to help you burn any belly fat. Sweet potatoes on the other hand will help you burn fat.

​When you eat things like bread and pasta (and definitely birthday cake), what makes you gain weight is the speed at which they’re converted to sugar.

​bread and pasta are almost immediately converted into sugar and because they’re so quickly converted to sugar, a large amount of sugar enters your bloodstream all at one time.

The same goes for soda, candy, and pretty much all other junk foods.

​When all of this sugar hits your bloodstream at once, your body has to quickly find something to do with it so it spikes your insulin level.

​Insulin is what opens your cells up to receive sugar and get it out of your bloodstream.

​Unfortunately, your muscles and other cells can only accept so much sugar at one time.

So rather than letting this sugar go to waste, because it is usable fuel, your body stores that extra sugar in fat cells.

If your body doesn't have enough fat cells to accept all the sugar, It makes more of them. If your body prefers to gain weight around the stomach, then it will make more fat cells around your stomach.

​However, when you eat better carbohydrates like sweet potatoes for example, your body and blood stream don't get that megadose of sugar all at once.

​Instead, the sugars are broken down and slowly released into your bloodstream.

When the sugars are released into your bloodstream more slowly, your body doesn't have to scramble to find places for that sugar to go. Those sugars are simply fed to your cells that need them or they’re burned as fuel.

​Your insulin doesn't spike and your fat cells don't get fed which means you don't gain weight.
