When it comes to juicing, you want to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to nutrients. Focusing on the fruit and vegetable list below is a good place to start.
You also want to opt for organic as often as possible (ideally everything you get would be organic). And I know that can get expensive so here's a few ideas to help you cut cost:
- Local farmers markets - often have great deals on fresh produce, fun environment, its outside, and you're supporting your community.
- Check for coupons and sales at your local grocery stores - scout the coupons that come in the mail and keep an eye out for regular specials your store might run. For example, my grocery store has great deals on Wednesdays so that's when I get my produce.
- Check the flea markets - we have a big flea market near us that has a huge area dedicated to fresh, locally grown produce. They don't always advertise so you may have to go in and walk around a bit to see if your flea market has a produce section.
- Shop produce that's in season - this saves a lot of money and ensures you're getting the freshest ingredients. Plus most of the fruit you buy can be frozen at home and used for months to follow.
The 80/20 Rule
To cut down on sugar intake and to ensure you're getting enough vegetables follow the 80/20 rule. Meaning 80% vegetables and 20% fruit. This can be done in two ways:
Juice fruit first thing in the morning. Then make the rest of your juices exclusively vegetables. To follow this method you'll have to juice several times throughout the day.
Make your glass of juice 80% vegetables and 20% fruit. This is the method I most often follow. Its easier and if you get busy and don't have time to juice again, at least you know you had that one balanced juice .

Try to rotate fruits and vegetables several times throughout the year. This ensures you're getting the full spectrum of nutrients and not overloading on any one thing.

There's two primary types of juicers. There's the centrifugal which uses a rapidly spinning blade to extract the juice. Then there's the masticating which slowly smash the juice out of the produce. Both have their pros and cons but overall, if you can get a masticating juicer it pays for itself in the long run.
The centrifugal juicer is the most common juicer and the one that many people start with. They're affordable, often under $100 and they extract a decent amount of juice. Take a look at the pros and cons:

- Easy to clean
- Perfect juicer for 1-2 people
- Fast juice production
- Doesn't take up a lot of space
- Great for hard and fibrous vegetables
Cons - Centrifugal Juicer
- Produce more waste
- Cause the juice to oxidize faster
- Less efficient than other types - doesn't get much juice from leafy greens and you can't juice wheatgrass
This is the type of juicer that I started out with. It works as a starter juicer if you're not totally sure how much juicing you're going to do. I would say the biggest benefits of this are its speed and ease of use. The 2 biggest drawbacks, and the ones that caused me to upgrade to a masticating juicer, are that you get very little juice from greens and it causes rapid oxidation of your juice.
The reason you don't get much from greens is because there's a little space between the juicer and the blades. Its not a big space but big enough to throw wheat grass and leafy greens directly into the pulp container. A way around that is to press your greens into a tight little ball. You'll get slightly more juice but this isn't ideal if you plan on juicing many greens or wheat grass.
It also causes your juice to oxidize faster. This happens for two reasons:
- The rapidly spinning blades cause friction and heat. This heat can damage the enzymes in your juice.
- The rapid spinning also introduces oxygen into your juice. The extra oxygen also causes the enzymes to break down.
If you go this route, you'll want to drink your juice within about 15 minutes. This ensures that you're getting the maximum amount of healthy enzymes from you juice. Below are the two best centrifugal juicers for your money. There are cheaper ones but believe me, just spend the extra money. These two are much easier to use, more powerful, and the motors & blades will last.
Masticating juicers are ideal if you plan on juicing regularly. They cost a little more money than the centrifugal juicers but they quickly pay for themselves with higher quality and volume of juice. Check out the pros and cons below:

- You can juice anything - including greens and wheat grass.
- Produce more juice and less waste than centrifugal juicers
- Higher quality juice - much lower heat and friction
- Perfect juicer for a family - the final juice stores longer due to the low heat and oxidation
- Great for hard and fibrous vegetables
- Quieter than centrifugal juicers
- Multiple uses - with attachments - this juicer can make: nut butters, baby food, sorbet, nut milks (such as almond and soy milk), pasta and even crush whole coffee beans.
Cons - Masticating Juicer
- More expensive than centrifugal juicers
- Smaller chute - so you have to do a little pre-cutting.
- Takes a little longer to extract the juice
Ultimately, if you become a regular juicer you'll probably end up getting a masticating juicer. Clean up takes a few more minutes, its a little slower to extract the juice (because it uses an auger to literally press the juice out) but the final product is well worth it. The biggest reasons I switched, and you probably will too are:
- You get more juice - produce is expensive (especially if you go organic...which you should be). I like to get all of the juice I can from the fruits and vegetables I buy.
- You can juice anything - most importantly you can juice greens and wheat grass. I personally love to juice lots of greens and I got tired of hand cranking wheat grass and adding it to my cup.
- Your juice stores longer - this juicer uses an auger rather than spinning blades which results in lower heat, friction and oxidation. Meaning the juice will retain its enzymes for up to 72 hours in the refrigerator. So even though it takes a few more minutes to extract the juice, you can store it and only break out the juicer a few times a week.
- It has multiple uses - I've got limited counter space and I don't have room for many single use machines (other than the coffee pot) cluttering up my space. With a few attachments you can use the masticating juicer to grind coffee, make almond butter and do lots of other fun things making it a go to kitchen accessory.
The primary differences between these two juicers is the size and versatility. The VRT350 (above) is smaller than the Omega J8006. Perfect if you're low on counter space. The VRT350 is however, not as versatile. It can still make nut butters, sorbet, baby food and other things but it doesn't work as a food processor or coffee grinder like the J8006. The J8006 also carries a 15 year warranty as opposed to the 10 year warranty of the VRT350.
